Want to burn calories, improve your endurance, and get your heart pumping without going to the gym? HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) is a popular workout method that alternates short periods of intense exercise with recovery periods. The best part? You can get started right in your living room with little or no equipment!
How to Measure Distance During HIIT
When practicing HIIT, measuring distance can help you track your performance and progress. You don’t need expensive fitness equipment to get started.
1. Count Your Steps: Use a fitness tracker or smartphone to estimate how far you move during walking, jogging, or running intervals.
2. Measure Your Workout Space: If you have a backyard, driveway, or open area, measure a short distance using a tape measure. Mark your starting and finishing points so you can repeat the same distance each session.
3. Use Time Instead of Distance: For beginners working out indoors, timed intervals are often easier and safer. Try 20 seconds of fast movement followed by 40 seconds of rest or slow movement.
4. Track Your Progress: Record the distance covered or repetitions completed during each interval. Over time, you may notice that you can move farther or complete more repetitions in the same amount of time.

Your Beginner-Friendly 10-Minute HIIT Workout
Warm up for 2 minutes, then perform these exercises:
- Jumping jacks: 20 seconds
- Bodyweight squats: 20 seconds
- Mountain climbers: 20 seconds
- Marching in place: 40 seconds of recovery
Repeat the circuit twice, resting as needed, then finish with gentle cooldown movements.
Prefer a low-impact workout? Replace jumping jacks with step jacks and mountain climbers with slow standing knee drives. Keep your movements controlled, especially when you’re just starting out.

Start Small, Get Stronger!
Beginners should focus on proper technique and gradual progress rather than maximum speed. Train two or three times per week, allow recovery between challenging sessions, and stop if you experience chest pain, dizziness, or unusual shortness of breath.
